Year 9 Options - Performing Arts Dance

WHY THIS SUBJECT IS IMPORTANT

Performing arts in its many forms, is a growing and exciting industry in Britain.  It is an expanding area whilst many other industries are in decline. The Performing Arts industry provides employment and career opportunities in many areas. For example, in entertainment, TV, radio, backstage, production, personnel, theatre management and arts' administration to mention but a few.  BTEC Dance can be a starting point for a variety of careers in the public and private sector such as a dancer, dance teacher, choreographer, physiotherapist, dance therapist, dance photographer/videographer, dance administrator, dance writer/journalist or community dance artist. 

Dance is an exciting subject to study! Studying a WJEC course in Dance will additionally support your ability to work under pressure as part of a team and independently. It will help develop skills such as creativity, problem solving, critical thinking and people management, all of which have been identified within the TOP TEN skills required for employment in 2025+.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The course is structured into three units; all of which are designed to offer you an insight into the creative industry and the vast styles of theatre. 

Unit 1: Performing 30% - Unit 1 provides learners with a holistic knowledge and understanding of the skills and techniques needed to reproduce an existing piece of professional/published work.

Uni 2: Creating 30% - Unit 2 provides learners with the opportunity to gain, develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the skills and techniques needed to create and refine original work in the performing arts.

Unit 3: Performing Arts Practice 40% - Unit 3 introduces learners to areas of the performing arts that need to be considered when responding to an industry commission. 

Learners will need to draw on their knowledge of the skills and techniques needed to reproduce an existing piece of professional  /  published work from Unit 1 alongside their knowledge and understanding of the skills and techniques needed to create and refine original work from Unit 2.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed throughout the course, during lessons and through performances to a live audience.

In addition to this, you will be assessed by the following measures:

  • Your contribution to class discussions and activities set by the teacher.
  • Any written logs and notes you produce.
  • A research portfolio and presentation materials.
  • The performances you participate in and the feedback you respond to.
  • The skills you consistently demonstrate such as; attendance, organisation, confidence, creativity, imagination, problem solving, high levels of oracy and many others.
