Literacy Support
At Westfield Academy, we understand the importance of equipping our students with the communication skills to enable them to become valued and successful members of society.
What is Literacy?
- The ability to read, write, speak and listen accurately in order to communicate effectively (National Literacy Trust).
- The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts (UNESCO).
Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society (UNESCO).
Reading, writing, speaking and listening underpin students' learning at Westfield Academy. As a staff, we take a disciplinary approach to literacy across the curriculum.
